Austin City Council to spend $2M on motel rooms for Covid 19 stricken homeless

Millions of dollars will be spent to house homeless people at an Austin motel, KLBJ’s Patrick Osborn reports.

The City of Austin is planning to spend just under $2-million for a 60-days lease of the Crowne Plaza Hotel in North Austin, so they can house homeless people infected with the corona virus.

In next week’s Austin City Council session, council will vote to rent out parts of the Crowne Plaza Hotel to use as a shelter for people who have been exposed to COVID-19.  Mayor Steve Adler says the only way to stop the spread is to keep people isolated as much as possible. “That’s what life has become now for us. Its going to go on like this for a while.”

The city is expected to spend very big on this idea.  For just 60 days of operation, nearly $2-million will be spent on this agreement.  Two 30-day extensions would be optional, each at nearly $1-million a month.
