Austin-Bergstrom International Airport expects more very busy days ahead for passengers. Each day through Monday, the airport expects an estimated 28,000 people to fly in and out of the airport, and expects these trends to continue regularly on Thursdays, Fridays, Sundays and Mondays.
The single-busiest day in the airport’s history was seen last October when 35,298 people flew out of the city. Officials do not expect any day this week to surpass that number.
The travel trends are expected to last through the summer because of more flights to nonstop destinations, as well as more available airline seats. The airport anticipates setting a new passenger record this year of 20 million, breaking the 17.3 million passenger record set in 2019.
This week, airport leadership met with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to address passenger wait times and continues to partner with TSA to improve passenger flow and TSA staffing levels. Airport leadership has also met with the Consolidated Rental Car Facility operator and has requested an after-action report to thoroughly understand the cause of Monday morning’s traffic back-up.
The jet fuel shortage alert issued for airlines on Monday has been lifted and normal fueling operations resumed on Wednesday afternoon.
