Austin-Travis County EMS has been dealing with an ongoing issue of staffing. But on Friday, a new cadet class will graduate, helping to increase the ranks a little bit further.
Austin-Travis County EMS Cadet Class 0322, consisting of 15 Field Cadets and one Communications Cadet, will graduate the Academy on May 20, 2022 at 1:00 pm. The graduation and official swearing-in ceremony will be held at the Texas State Capitol in the Capitol Extension Auditorium.
“It’s very special to be graduating during National EMS Week and the first time we’ve held the ceremony at the Texas State Capitol” said EMS Public Information Officer Captain Darren Noak, “we are very excited to have these new cadets join our team and look forward to them starting their careers caring for our community.”
The Austin EMS Association and the City of Austin have been in negotiations all year for the new contract. Pay and staffing remain two of the biggest sticking points amid those ongoing contract talks.
The current contracts for all three of Austin’s public safety departments are set to expire in September.
