An officer with the Leander Police Department has been placed on leave following a shooting at a North Austin motel early Tuesday morning.
Members of the Central Texas Regional SWAT team were serving a narcotics search warrant at the In Town Suites Extended Stay Hotel on North Lamar. Despite this occurring in Austin, the Austin Police Department was actually not involved in the execution of the search warrant due to the fact that it had originated in Cedar Park.
According to investigators, officers made entry into the room around 12:30 a.m. and once inside, a Leander police officer drew a weapon and fired, striking and killing a 34-year-old man. Another person was taken to the hospital with injuries not related to gunshot wounds.
Details have been fairly thin and as of around noon it still was not clear what led the officer to shoot, nor is it clear if the man who was shot was armed at the time. No names have been released.
The Austin Police Department is now investigating the shooting.
The Central Texas Regional SWAT team is comprised of the Cedar Park Police Department, Leander Police Department, Georgetown Police Department, and Pflugerville Police Department.
