Central Texas Economy Remains Red Hot

The Austin Chamber of Commerce is out with its latest CenTex Economy Report showing another strong month of gains and job growth.

From June of 2021 to June of 2022, the Chamber report shows 75,000 jobs added to area payrolls, reflecting a growth of 6.4 percent within those 12 months.  Austin has also landed in the number eight spot on the list of the top 50 best performing metros in the United States.

Other highlights include:

  • Austin made up all of 2020’s pandemic-related job losses by May 2021 and the metro ranks first for job growth since February 2020.
  • Austin’s leisure and hospitality industry added an outstanding 5,800 jobs in June, surpassing pre-pandemic February 2020 by 7,400 jobs or 5.5%.
  • Austin’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate is 2.9% in June, unchanged from May.

In Austin, 10 of the 11 major private industry sectors added jobs over the last 12 months, most notably leisure and hospitality (15.7% or 19,200 jobs); information (11.0% or 5,000 jobs); professional and business services (9.9% or 23,200); and transportation, warehousing, and utilities (9.9% or 2,800). Only construction and natural resources lost jobs (0.5% or 400 jobs).
