Watson Claims Runoff Victory Over Israel

In a tight race to be the next mayor of Austin, Kirk Watson found himself victorious Tuesday night in a runoff battle between two former state lawmakers.  Watson, a former state senator, was up against Celia Israel, a former state representative.  In November’s general election, Israel claimed the majority of the votes, however, because she did not claim more than 50-percent of the vote, a runoff was called for December 13.

Watson’s margin of victory was not large — 886 votes.

During his victory speech, Watson spoke of his desire for a unified Austin.

“It will be the beginning of a new direction,” he said.  “When we choose to work together, we will heal old divides and solve old problems.”

It will not be the first time Watson has held onto the reins of the Austin City Council, having served one previous term as mayor from 1997-2001.

Israel had strong support from many local activist groups in the area.  Following her defeat, she offered her thanks to the staff and volunteers who helped along the way.

“This was a people-driven, volunteer campaign and I am so proud of this campaign,” she said.

Amid calls from supporters to run again in 2024, Israel said she’s unsure what the future holds for her, but, at least for now, she’s just looking forward to a little quiet time.

Watson wasn’t the only victor on Tuesday night.  Three city council races were also decided.

In District 3, Jose Velasquez claimed victory over Daniela Silva.  He’ll take over for Pio Renteria next month.

Ryan Alter was the winner in District 5, claiming a fairly strong victory over Stephanie Bazan.  He’ll take over the seat currently filled by Ann Kitchen.

The race for District 9 was the closest of all.  Zohaib “Zo” Qadri won the runoff against Linda Guerrero by less than 300 votes.  Qadri takes over for longtime councilwoman Kathie Tovo.

Austin City Manager Spencer Cronk issued a statement following the election of the new mayor and members of council:

“On behalf of the entire City of Austin government I would like to offer our warmest congratulations to our newly elected Mayor and new and returning Council Members.  Their commitment to representing our community is the cornerstone of our democracy and provides such an important link between government and the people. City staff will be working to give our newly elected officials the support they need to get to work from day one.”

Inauguration Day is January 6, 2023.
