The opioid crisis has exploded in recent years across Central Texas, driven largely by an influx in fentanyl-laced drugs.  Due to a spike in overdose deaths a year earlier, a public health crisis was declared in Travis County in 2022.

On Tuesday, January 17, 2023, officials with the City of Austin and Travis County will be joined by U.S. Representative Lloyd Doggett for an announcement regarding a new opioid overdose prevention program, funded through federal dollars.

Mayor Kirk Watson, County Judge Andy Brown, Austin Public Health Director Adrienne Sturrup, and Health Authority Dr. Desmar Walkes will all be on-hand for the announcement.

A press conference is planned for 10:00 a.m.
