Three Austin Police Officers on Leave Following Downtown Shooting

Sunday night devolved into another scene of violence in downtown Austin.

Shortly after 11:30 p.m., the Austin Police Department received reports of a man with a gun near 5th and Guadalupe.  Roughly one minute later, a second call came in about a man, now on 6th Street, firing a weapon.

“People were running in the 300 block of West 6th Street, and generally it was chaos,” said Chief of Police Joseph Chacon.

The shooting touched off a brief, but frantic search, and officers eventually spotted a man who matched the description.  The officers commanded the man to stop, but he took off running instead.

“Within seconds of the foot pursuit beginning, shots were fired,” Chacon said.  “There were multiple officers that discharged their duty firearms at the individual, and then the individual did go down.”

A gun was recovered at the scene, Chacon said.

First responders gave the man treatment before he was rushed to a hospital, where he later died.

A gunshot victim was found as police were initially searching for the shooter.  That person is believed to have non-life threatening injuries.

As per department protocol, all body-worn camera footage will be released to the public within ten days.  Three Austin police officers are now on administrative leave.

Multiple investigations will be conducted.
