A deputy with the Travis County Sheriff’s Office is recovering from a scary situation that unfolded on Tuesday morning.
According to the sheriff’s office, the deputy was responding to a big-rig crash at SH 130 and Pearce Lane when he exited his vehicle to help the driver. Another truck then lost control on the ice and crashed into them, leaving the deputy pinned under one of tires.
The Travis County Sheriff’s Office, Department of Public Safety, Austin Fire Department, and Austin-Travis County EMS were able to free the deputy shortly after 9:30 a.m. and he was taken to a local hospital where he underwent surgery.
He is expected to survive and make a recovery, the sheriff’s office said.
“I want to offer my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who responded and assisted this deputy in his time of dire need,” said Sheriff Sally Hernandez. “Both his biological and TCSO family are relieved and thankful that he’s alive. Please, please don’t drive on these icy roadways. It’s not worth your life or the lives of the first responders who are literally putting their personal safety on the line.”
The deputy has not been identified publicly.
