Texas Senator John Cornyn will participate in a roundtable discussion Thursday in Buda at Johnson High School to discuss the community’s ongoing battle with the deadly opioid fentanyl. Cornyn will be joined by leadership from the Hays Consolidated Independent School District, local law enforcement, and parents who have lost a child to fentanyl poisoning, with the hope of raising more awareness about the problem.
Over the past year, Hays CISD has lost five students to fentanyl poisoning.
During the roundtable, Cornyn will hear from some of the parents of those students, as well as school district officials, student leaders, and local law enforcement agencies on their coordinated response. Participants are also expected to share their experiences with Hays CISD’s ‘Fighting Fentanyl’ awareness campaign, which is a joint effort between the families, the school district, and students across Hays CISD campuses.
Following the roundtable, students from the Hays CISD Student Advisory Council will showcase student-created fentanyl awareness campaign posters and then Sen. Cornyn will hold a press conference.
More than 1,600 Texans died from a fentanyl-related overdose in 2021, an 89% increase from 2020, and the synthetic opioid is now the leading cause of death for Americans between the ages of 18-45.
