Travis County Identifies Man in Officer-Involved Shooting

The Travis County Sheriff’s Officer has identified the man shot and killed in an officer-involved shooting on April 20 as Dimitri Amarillas, 25, of Austin.

According to reports, both the TCSO and Manor Police Department responded to a 911 call shortly after 9:00 p.m. reporting a man walking in the middle of the roadway in the 10200 block of East US HWY 290.

At 9:06 pm, police and deputies were notified by the Austin Police Department of an attempted carjacking t 10095 East US 290 HWY Service Road Eastbound.  The victim was stabbed in that incident.

A deputy made contact with Amarillas, who was reportedly holding a knife and not complying with instructions. A taser was later unsed unsuccessfully, and both the deputy and Manor officer opened fire.  Amarillas was pronounced dead at 9:40 p.m.

A full investigation is underway by the Texas Rangers. TCSO’s Criminal Investigations Division and TCSO Internal Affairs Unit are also conducting parallel investigations.

The deputy and officer are on administrative leave.
