On Tuesday, June 6, 2023, Austin police officers and medics with Austin-Travis County EMS responded to a shooting at the Bridge at Harris Ridge Apartments at 1501 E. Howard Lane. Several 9-1-1 callers reported hearing multiple gunshots in the area of the apartments. Upon arrival, officers found a teen girl who had been shot — later identified as Mikalah Franklin. She was taken to a local hospital where she died.
According to family members, Franklin was walking a friend to a rideshare in the parking lot at the time of the shooting.
On Wednesday, police announced the arrest of Micah Marshall, 17. A motive remains unclear, but police have charged Marshall with first-degree murder in connection to the shooting death of Franklin.
Marshall remains in the Travis County Jail.
Franklin’s death was the 31st murder of the year for Austin.
