Voters in the Lockhart Independent School District on Tuesday approved a ballot measure to join the Austin Community College District.
Results as of 7 a.m. Wednesday, November 6, 2024, are:
61.2% FOR
38.8% AGAINST
“We are thrilled to welcome Lockhart ISD into the ACC District,” says ACC Chancellor Russell Lowery-Hart. “This partnership reflects our commitment to supporting the educational and economic goals of the Lockhart community. ACC will work hand-in-hand with Lockhart families to provide accessible pathways to higher education and workforce training.”
According to ACC officials, the vote means Lockhart ISD residents will be able to take advantage the benefits of joining the district in exchange for paying property taxes. Those include:
•In-district tuition & fees: Students within the district support the college through tax dollars and receive lower tuition and fees. In-district students do not have to pay the College’s out-of-district fee ($201 per credit hour).
•Expanded regional educational offerings: The College’s annexation proposal includes three phases for growth starting with career and workforce development programs designed to help Lockhart residents upskill for in-demand jobs in the Central Texas region.
•Student support resources: Access to ACC resources and support services, such as tutoring, career counseling, and specialized programs, at a reduced cost.
•Career development programs: Partnerships with businesses and community organizations, creating internship opportunities, apprenticeships, and job placements.
The Board will hold a special meeting on Thursday, November 14, to certify the results.
