The Austin City Council will consider changes to the short-term rental regulations next month.
In the wake of a 2023 lawsuit involving a couple from Houston, the City of Austin was found by a judge to have violated their Constitutional rights by banning the use of non-owner occupied STRs, also known as Type 2 STRs. In a recent memo, Austin’s Development Services Department sounded the alarm, claiming the ruling effectively made the city’s current rules unenforceable. As proposed, the changes would modify regulations to allow STR use with city approval, as well as new regulations on STR owners, operators, and platforms as businesses, and enforcing licensing requirements.
The public hearings on these proposed amendments will be held at Austin City Hall, 301 W. 2nd St., on the following dates:
- Tuesday, Feb. 4, 1 p.m.
Joint Planning Commission and City Council Meeting - Tuesday, Feb. 11, 6 p.m.
