Capital Metro Unveils $9.8B Transit Overhaul Plan

Austin Metrorail

  • Capital Metro, along with the City of Austin, have unveiled a plan to overhaul Austin’s transit system
  • Project Connect, as it is titled, is expected to fix transportation issues in Austin
  • To the tune of $9.8 billion, the plan wants to add dedicated transit lanes that would be used for buses or light rail
  • Cap Metro and the COA are considering different options to implement their plan which includes designing street paths that could be underground, at street level or even elevated
  • They propose they could increase the average amount of people traveling per light from about 126 to about 235 with 200 of those people using transit
  • Opponents of the plan argue traffic congestion would increase if buses and/or light rail trains are placed on existing roads
  • The model proposed states more people can be moved with the transit alternatives without displacing car traffic
  • Austin Mayor Steve Adler spoke with FOX 7 Austin News and said the COA and Cap Metro plan to decide on an option to pursue by January
  • They would then place that option for public vote by November 2020
