The Austin City Council is not sure how it wants to fund infrastructure improvements to the Rainey Street District. A proposal to create a dedicated funding stream remains on hold at City Hall as the council considers whether of not Hotel Occupancy Taxes could be used instead.
Council member Kathie Tovo said the growth is just too rapid to not be addressed quickly. The fund would generate money specifically for improvements to the Rainey Street Historic District, but there is still a debate over whether the city should use hotel taxes instead.
There are more than a dozen new developments proposed for that area, many nearby residents say the rapid growth right now is just not sustainable.
