On Thursday, the Austin City Council is expected to vote on zoning changes for a 97-acre mixed use development known as 4700 Riverside. If approved, it would offer 4700 housing units, hundreds of hotel rooms, and millions of square feet of office space. The site currently holds five apartment complexes which are slated to be torn down in the coming years, but the owners of that site, Presidium and Nimes Real Estate, have now agreed to a partnership with the Ending Community Homelessness Coalition to provide up to 100 homeless people with housing for the next five years, until that demolition is complete.
Presidium and Nimes have also agreed to a $1.75-million donation for support services.
The city council still needs to give final approval for the new development, which is expected to be constructed in phases over one or two decades.
The development has been subjected to regular protests by opponents, including back in August when six arrests were made.
