It appears Republican State House Speaker Dennis Bonnen has been caught offering political influence in exchange for help ousting moderate Republicans in the 2020 Primary, as a secretly recorded tape of the Speaker has surfaced.
The secret audio is of Speaker Bonnen in a meeting with Empower Texans CEO Michael Quinn Sullivan back in June. The tape seems to reveal Bonnen asking Sullivan to help target certain Republican House members in the 2020 primary. Bonnen then offers Sullivan press credentials for his organization’s reporters, something Sullivan has been fighting for for years.
In a statement Bonnen said his colleagues have always deserved the facts and context this recording provides, and with clear evidence now disproving allegations of criminal wrongdoing, the House can finally move on. The Texas Rangers are investigating whether any laws were violated.
Texas Democrats have taken to the courts to get any other audio or relevant documents released.
