Since January, the Travis County hospital district has partnered with Lyft to provide 2400 free rides to more than 400 low-income or indigent patients resulting in a 25% decrease in missed appointments. Central Health spent $50,000 on this pilot through September 30, and is considering extending it next year. .
Central Health CEO Mike Geeslin said access to transportation is among the biggest hurdles for people when it comes to doctors appointments. Geeslin also said they wanted to provide any means necessary to access health care and make their appointments.
Central Health says the pilot program has given rides to more than 400 patients since January at an average cost to the taxpayer of $15.31 per ride and is considering extending the program into next year.
