The Office of the City Auditor in Austin released a memo that stated “while a goal of zero traffic deaths and serious injuries is an appropriate vision for Austin, ATD staff aknowledged that it is unlikely the City will achieve that goal by 2025.”
It’s somethintg critics of the Vision Zero program have said for years.
The memo also blames the lack of ability to address conditions that contribute to crashes on jurisdictional boundaries. For example, I-35, which can be a very dangerous road, is TxDOT jurisdiction, meaning Austin has no control.
Another issue impeding the city in addressing the traffic safety are state laws that make it difficult to lower speedlimits and a law that prohibits red-light cameras, according to the memo.
