The Austin Independent School District has revised its long-term school closure plan. AISD’s original plan called for the closure of a dozen campuses over the span of five years. Now, the list is considerably smaller with the removal of eight of the schools from that overall list.
The remaining four campuses are all elementary schools: Pease, Metz, Sims, and Brooke. AISD officials say the decision was made following heavy pushback from the community over many of the schools being located east of I-35. Under the revised plan, AISD says it will continue to focus on bridging the enrollment gap and promoting inclusivity for all students.
Plans for the remaining four campuses on the list are as follows:
- Sims students will consolidate with Norman Elementary
- Metz students will consolidate with Sanchez Elementary
- Brooke students will consolidate with either Govalle Elementary or Linder Elementary, depending on whether they live north or south of the lake.
- Pease will close completely to be reopened as an AISD social justice center
The schools removed from the list will not be considered until further notice.
On Monday night, the AISD Board of Trustees will detail the plan further.
