The school board has now seen the full plan, which includes the reshuffling of 10,000 students to more modernized campuses. Roughly 6100 of those kids will come from what AISD says is a low-income background. AISD Equity Officer Stephanie Hawley says people need to look long term here and see the benefit for all students.
Pease Elementary is on the list of a dozen schools facing possible closure in AISD. Pease PTA president Kristine Graraña hopes the district thinks outside of closures. Graraña along with several other East Austin families are wondering why so many of the schools tapped for a possible closure are in their neighborhoods. Graraña also wants to see how the plan is meeting student needs.
10,000 students will be reassigned to more modern campuses. AISD expects to save around $240-million through the closures.
