Limited right-of-ways has been the biggest constraint on improving I-35 through downtown for generations. Some have said ‘take the decks down’ while others have called for underground lanes. TxDOT’s Diann Hodges said all options are being discussed, like what improvements can be done in downtown Austin, Hodges said they are going to go ahead and make improvments on the north and south while figuring that out.
Hodges said those improvements are managed non-tolled lanes that will be built starting sometime in 2022 for $700 million dollars.
Many are still wondering what about the road through downtown and UT campus. TxDOT’s Diann Hodges said thanks to limited right-of-ways, that’s big head-scratcher for them, too, because downtown has some complications, so that is something they are also trying to figure out.
