A brooding US Tariff fight in the European Union has some Austin Tech firms concerned.

President Donald Trump threatened tariffs on France over an EU proposed Digital services tax, Trump fears that tax unfairly targets US tech firms. Austin Technology Council CEO Amber Gunst worries this new tariff war front will further limit opportunities for local tech businesses to reach a global market, “and if you can’t have global customers at this point, your business suffers, and the local economy suffers.” Gunst said the ATC is already seeing those kinds of effects in the agricultural and manufacturing industries nation wide.

Her biggest fear as this plays out at the international level is, “were going to have political leaders who dig their feet in the sand, refuse to come to the table and refuse to figure out a bipartisan way to work together to enhance commerce, and to give companies the ability to built to a global level.” She worries the federal government will not be able to get the Trump Administration in line with how global leaders work.
