- AISD is encouraging parents to not pack a lunch for their children
- The district says if more students eat the breakfast and lunch provided at the schools, they will be able to improve the quality of ingredients
- Their goal is to only use grass-fed beef, and offer organic produce and milk
- The only way to provide such ingredients would be if more students opted to eat lunch at school instead of packed lunches
- If more students eat meals at school, the AISD would receive more federal funding through the National School Lunch Program which reimburses school districts on a per-student basis, whether kids buy lunch or receive free or reduced-price meals
- To reach their goal, half of the students in the district must eat breakfast at the schools and three-quarters must each lunch
- About a third at school breakfast and about half ate school lunch last year
- Some parents have expressed packing a lunch helps their children spend more time with their friends rather than waiting in lines for food which could cut into their already limited break time
