Travis County Commissioners Court Calls for Applications to Serve as County Court at Law #4 Judge

(Travis County) – The Honorable Mike Denton, Judge for the County Court at Law Number 4 of Travis County, has resigned from the bench effective September 15, 2019. The Travis County Commissioners Court is seeking applications from qualified individuals to serve in that role until a successor has been elected and qualified for office pending election on November 3, 2020.

What are the minimum qualifications for a County Court-at-Law Judge?

The judge of a statutory county court must:

  • be at least 25 years of age;
  • be a United States citizen;
  • have resided in the county for at least two years before October 1, 2019;
  • be a licensed attorney in this state who has practiced law or served as a judge of a court in this state, or both combined, for the four years preceding election or appointment, unless otherwise provided for by law.

Preference will be given to attorneys with several years of courtroom experience, with the majority of that experience in criminal law. Due to the high volume of family law cases assigned to County Court at Law Number 4, candidates must have the required sensitivity and expertise needed when working with these types of cases.

Interviews will be held on September 26th beginning at 1:30. Finalists will be notified of selection on September 24th. No other dates will be available for scheduled interviews by the Commissioners Court for this appointment.

The Commissioners Court has approved an application packet, which includes information about the qualifications for office, detailed instructions, and an application form. Further information, and the packet, can be obtained by calling (512) 854-4774 or by visiting:

https://www.traviscountytx.gov/intergovernmental-relations/board-appointments .

The deadline for applications is 5:00 p.m. on Friday, September 13, 2019.
