Amid violent clashes, the University of Texas has announced it has suspendended its study abroad program in Hong Kong.
It’s unclear how many UT students are currently in Hong Kong, but about half of them have reportedly evacuated as those violent clashes continue. University officials say they remain in close contact with students who have chosen to remain in Hong Kong.
Out of an abundance of caution, the university says its spring 2020 study abroad program has been called off, and it’s unclear if that will extend to other semesters due to concerns that the violence and protests may continue, or even get worse over time.
The university plans to work with students who were planning to heard to Hong Kong to find an alternate location for their studies abroad.
