Pompeo Discusses Mideast Tension, Abbott Issues Warning to Austin

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has met with Saudi King Salman and separately with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to discuss the escalated crisis in the Persian Gulf. Pompeo arrived in the Saudi city of Jiddah earlier on Monday in a hastily arranged visit amid mounting tensions between Washington and Tehran as Iran’s navy chief warned Iranian forces wouldn’t hesitate to shoot down more U.S. surveillance drones from their skies.

Governor Greg Abbott weighs in on Austin’s loosened homeless ordinances

The governor has expressed his concern that Austin will rapidly begin to look like a tent city, and he’s now taken to Twitter to address the city council’s decision last week to severely limit the police from crackdowns on camping in public or panhandling.  

Abbott says: “If Austin, or any other Texas city, permits camping on city streets it will be another local ordinance the State if Texas will override.”  He adds, “At some point cities must start putting public safety and common sense first.”  

Austin police chief Brian Manley says the city council has further complicated his officers’ jobs with their decision.

Another hotel is popping up in Austin.  Planned near the University of Texas campus at Guadalupe and 26th Street, the Moxy Austin hotel will have 162 rooms.  It has a planned opening date of 2020.

Monday morning, Travis County officials cut the ribbon on a new mobile clinic for under-served eastern parts of the county. 

Central Health Chief Administrative Officer Larry Wallace says the first patient will be seen this morning at Barbara Jordan Elementary School on the new 40-foot CommUnity Care clinic bus.

Wallace says the bus will visit Colony Park, Del Valle and Creedmoor areas each week with primary and preventative care, vaccines and lab services.
