Alleyway off Red River between 7th and 8th street will be refurbished and upgraded

Following Austin City Council’s approval during session yesterday, the Public Works Department could start refurbishing and building on fence and gates to the alleyway known as “Crack Alley” between 7th and 8th off Red River in the next three weeks. Councilmember Kathie Tovo said this has been a long time coming, and has been high priority in terms of health and safety for quite awhile now.

Public Works Director Richard Mendoza says they could start work in the next three weeks.  The job itself will intail cleaning the alley of all debris, the surface will be repaved and improved, and adding iron fencing to secure it.

Red River businesses have long complained about homelessness, drug use and prostitution plaguing that alleyway.

Public Works’ Richard Mendoza gives council a timeline that starts with clean up beginning in three weeks and believes when started, the project could take about three months to finish.
