Trump to Visit Shooting Sites, Bonnen Apologizes, ATX Council Skips Another Homeless Forum

President Donald Trump is due in Ohio and Texas as he appeals for national unity and healing in the wake of mass shootings in Dayton and El Paso. 

White House officials say Trump will grieve and pray with families and survivors today and discuss ways to prevent such violence.

Texas Senator Ted Cruz is calling on all politicians to tamp down their rhetoric.

“Everyone in the political arena needs to just ratchet down the rhetoric,” Cruz says.  “It’s fine to disagree on a policy issue or a substance issue, but the hateful and inflamed rhetoric that we see on both sides of the aisle, that is not good for who we are as Texans and that is not good for who we are as Americans.”

The Texas House speaker is apologizing to lawmakers for “embarrassing” and “hurtful” things he said on a secretly-recorded conversation with a hardline conservative activist in a scandal that has rocked state Republicans. 

First-term Speaker Dennis Bonnen sent an apology email Tuesday. 

It doesn’t address anything specific that Bonnen said and it notably avoids mention of an alleged “hit list” of Republican lawmakers to target in the upcoming 2020 primary.

Another public forum was held last night regarding a new homeless shelter in South Austin.  

Much like a recent meeting hosted by the Downtown Austin Alliance, Mayor Steve Adler and the Austin City Council were once again absent.  

More than 100 people gathered at the Woodlawn Baptist Church.  

Police Chief Brian Manley was on hand to answer many of their questions.

Results of a new survey highlight the dangers Austin-Travis County EMS staff faces each day. 

Over the past two years, 86-percent say they’ve been verbally abused more than once, and 63-percent say they’ve been physically assaulted, with the majority of those cases happening in the back of an ambulance.

Another dog has died after swimming in Lady Bird Lake, potentially from a blue-green algae bloom that has containmented the water and spread to mroe than 40{fbcf2a5c42fe71624047a18c73673849799bd5d53cdb5d8ca16f4833367ca63d} of its surface.  The algae can make humans sick, but, it can kill pets.  That’s word from City officials.
