A recent housing study found 72-percent of people in San Marcos are renters, and about 65-percent of them spend one-third of their income on housing. The city council has postponed a plan to create a 545-bedroom student housing complex.
Council members like Lisa Prewitt worry about the predatory nature of renting by the room when the cost is around $700-900 a room, graduates cannot rent them either when they are looking for a job and up to their teeth in student debt.
Prewitt also said an excess of student housing leaves little room for families. A recent study found 72-percent of people in San Marcos are renters, and 65-percent spend up to 1/3 of their salaries on housing alone.
