Austin City Council approves new rules for Dockless scooter riders

Austin City Council is laying out some new rules for riders of dockless scooters.

Riders younger than 18 have to wear helmets, or face a $20 to $40 dollar fine. Parents could also be fined for letting their kids ride around without a helmet. Only one person can ride a scooter at a time.

Riders can use city sidewalks, but they have to ride in a reasonable and prudent way. Councilmember Paige Ellis explained that basically means if you are riding and lose control, crash or something of the like, it give law enforcement a reason to pull you aside for not riding in a “reasonable and prudent” manner. However Councilmember Pio Renteria expressed some concern this would leave a number of situations up to individual police interpretation.

Also if you don’t want a dockless scooter parked on your property, city staffers say residents and property owners can bar scooters from the grounds.

Transporation Department officials say it’ll be a few weeks before than can print out a full list of rules as the legal department still has to go through city council notes and write them out.
