Leander Mayor Troy Hill announced Wednesday that a planned downtown district known a Northline will be entering the first phase of construction, include 1.3 acres of urban civic space called Leander Town Square. Northline is the largest downtown project proposed in the heart of Leander’s transit-oriented development district.
“Leander Town Square will be the focal point of our new downtown,” said Hill. “This space could serve as the destination for a new city hall or other public function that could spur all kinds of new investment in our city.”
While city officials envision some type of public facility in Leander Town Square in partnership with Northline, including a new city hall, a final design has not yet been approved by the city. Council will discuss possible locations for a new city hall building at a retreat meeting this Friday and Saturday, June 21-22.
Alex Tynberg, Northline developer and owner of Northline Leander Development Company LLC, said his plans for installing horizontal infrastructure such as roads and utilities in the first phase of development will be submitted to the city this summer with construction anticipated later in the year.
In early 2018, the timeline for completion of Northline’s entire downtown center was estimated at 10 to 15 years. Expectations are that a fully developed Leander downtown could be valued at $800 million.
Northline is a proposed walkable town center with a mix of retail, housing, hotel, business, restaurant and civic space. The area spans 115 acres in Leander’s transit-oriented development district (TOD) located south of San Gabriel Parkway between US 183 and Toll 183A.
