Austin’s paid sick leave ordinance survives Texas Lege

Austin City Hall

Local paid sick leave ordinances are among legislation that is now dead at the Capitol.

The Austin City Council maintained its position that it has every right to force a private business to offer paid sick leave, and state lawmakers efforts to prevent that kind of ordinance have not succeeded this session.

Former Austin council member Ellen Troxclair said those ordinances fly in the face of what the Texas’ business climate is known for “A reasonable regulator environment, generally low taxes…that is what has led to the Texas Miracle. That is why we have people coming in droves.”

With that kind of local control legislation now dead, Troxclair is worried businesses wanting to expand or move to Texas will look elsewhere knowing city councils can wield that sort of power over them.
