Some parents are unhappy with AISD’s proposed sex ed curriculum

Austin ISD Parents reviewing district's revised Human Sexuality and Responsibility curriculum

At a community meeting and open review of AISD’s proposed revised Human Sexuality and Responsibility curriculum Tuesday evening (May 21st) a few dozen parents read through the course work and some don’t like what they see.

AISD mom Janet Teal said she’ll be taking her middle schooler out of AISD and place him into a private high school, that’s her conclusion after going through the district’s proposed updated human sexuality and responsibility curriculum. “Children are being encouraged to question their gender, question what their parents taught them. They’re being taught material that’s very inappropriate to their ages.” Teal also felt that parents are not being given enough time to look into the program properly, and she was not alone.

Other parents were furious, believing the district is suggesting to teach kids about a number sex acts. Another father said he is hesitant to opt his son out of the class. While he didn’t like a lot of the coursework, he added he doesn’t want his son to be left out socially.

But a few were content like AISD mom Amanda Ray. Ray has a 4th and 3rd grader and likes how her kids would be able to question anything in the course, “for the Middle school there’s an anonymous question box for each lesson, and students put questions in the box and the questions are going to be answered no matter what.”

AISD will vote on the revised curriculum at their regular meeting, June 17th.
