Huts Hamburgers has announced an official closing date, October 20th.
Owner operator Mike Hutchinson, 65, said unlike other businesses around downtown, the problem is not his landlord. He explained the property owner has been incredibly fair to him. But he did point to his age, taxes and the changes he sees in Downtown Austin’s demand as a few contributing factors. He explained his business just isn’t what it used to be ten years ago.
“This isn’t really the business model for what we’re doing down here. You know we’re just a hamburger place, sells beer and wine. The places that make any money downtown are bars, and we’re not a bar. That’s just the way it is, you know, that’s progress.”
But if you still need a Hut’s Hamburgers fix, Hutchinson said the location at ABIA which opened earlier this year is coming along nicely and is getting close to duplicating the original.
In an official statement the landowners said another restaurateur would take Hut’s place, but would not hint as to who.
