Lawmaker plans to strengthen Texas 21 tobacco law

Some lawmakers plan to expand on a new bill that raises the smoking age in Texas to 21. For decades it has been 18, but that’s no longer the case.  Now, only members of the military will be able to purchase tobacco or vapor products between ages 18-20.  But State Senator Nathan Johnson feels the new bill really won’t hold stores accountable for selling to people under 21. He says it only will mean a misdemeanor to the clerk selling the tobacco product to someone underage, but will not threaten the license of the store. He says he’ll introduce amendments in 2021 to increase those penalties significantly.
