On Monday, leaders from the City of Austin and Travis County joined together to break ground on a new low-income housing development in north-central Austin called Travis Flats. Once complete, the development will offer 146 residential units and 80,000 square feet of office space.
Travis Flats, located at Airport Boulevard and 53 1/2 Street, is part of Austin’s ongoing effort to rush out as many as 60,000 new low-income units across the city within the next decade.
Of the 146 available units, only 24 will be rented at market rate. The remaining 122 units will be offered to people or families making less than 60-percent of the median family income.
The project is a public-private partnership. While the land on which the development will sit is taxpayer-owned, the construction is being privately funded by two different companies. DMA Development will focus on the residential aspect while the Southwest Strategies Group will be in charge of the office space.
Travis Flats, when open, will comprise more than 1/3 of Travis County’s low-income unit inventory.
