Travis County calls latest legislative session "most hostile" in recent memory

One of the most contentious debates was over a new 3.5-percent limit on local property tax growth.  Commissioner Gerald Daugherty wonders what repercussions may come from that as voters head back to the ballots next year.

But the county said it did have some success, including a bill supporting statewide sobriety centers over jail, and new protections for the personal information of judges in the wake of the attempted assassination of judge Julie Kocurek.

Despite the hopes of the commissioners court, the new law does not exclude indigent defense money from counting toward the 3.5-percent limit.  That could cost the county money since an application has been submitted to the state to create a public defender’s office.
