The embattled acting Secretary of State David Whitley has delivered his resignation to Governor Abbott. Whitley spearheaded the State’s ill-fated voter purge attempt.
It was back in late January when Whitley released a report citing 95,000 names of what he called non-citizens on the State’s voter rolls, but within days the methodology of compiling the list was proven flawed.
Whitley’s nomination hearing went so poorly the Senate refused to vote on him. Rice University Political Scientist Mark Jones explained, Whitley would have been out even if he hadn’t resigned, “Since the senate didn’t confirm [Whitley] he could only serve during the session. “
Governor Abbott will now nominate his successor who would need to be confirmed by the legislature in 2021.
