Legislation for cheaper College, getting degrees quicker is heading to Governors desk

The third time was a charm for State Senator Royce West who authored this bill for the 3rd straight session.  Senate Bill 25 would save taxpayers, students and parents money by ensuring that community and junior college courses easily transfer towards a degree at a four-year university.

The goal of having 60-percent of college age Texans with a degree by the year 2030, a plan spearheaded by Higher Education Commissioner Dr. Raymund Paredes.

The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board concluded that the current system of transferring credits from one public university to another is costly, resulting in students accumulating an average of seven more credit hours than needed.

The long-term goal is to lower the cost of getting a degree.
