DPS Issues New Scam Warning for Central Texans

Scam warning

The Texas Department of Public Safety has put out a new warning that scammers have been contacting citizens in Central Texas claiming to be representatives of DPS who are conducting investigations into the abuse of Social Security numbers, as well as attempting to verify personal information.

Many of the scammers have said they will issue an arrest warrant if a person refuses to provide the information or money requested. During these calls, the scammers’ telephone number appears to be a legitimate DPS telephone number.

The following is from a Monday press release from DPS:

If someone calls, texts, emails or mails you asking for your personal information – e.g., social security number, credit card and bank account numbers, and passwords – DO NOT GIVE IT TO THEM if you cannot verify that the reason for the communication is legitimate. Even if they appear to be from a known business or a trusted source such as a government agency, they may be scamming you in order to steal your identity or money.  If you believe you are a victim of a scam, contact your local law enforcement agency.
