On Friday, April 19, 2019 McCallum High School teachers and staff will use a portion of their in-service day to learn how to Stop the Bleed,™ a community-focused training program that teaches the basics of severe bleeding control in an effort to preserve life and prevent death. Through lecture and hands-on practical exercises, participants learn how to use tourniquets, pack wounds, and take other critical steps in the moments following a traumatic event before first responders arrive. The techniques are straightforward and can be utilized in everyday life by anyone of any age, with no prior medical training required.
Stop the Bleed instructors from Austin-Travis County EMS, Capital Area Trauma Regional Advisory Council, Austin Fire Department, Austin Police Department, Williamson County EMS, and Baylor Scott & White Health will conduct the training for up to 160 teachers and staff.
Officials say educating the public on how to stop severe bleeding can mean the difference between life and death for an injured person, and empower non-medically trained bystanders to intervene and save a life in the event of a bleeding emergency.
