Campus closures are slated to begin in August of next year for the Austin school district. No set number of schools have been singled out yet, but the district said it will focus on those with consistently low enrollment, although that won’t be the only criteria.
Superintendent Dr. Paul Cruz said this is not going to be an easy decision for anyone, but continued it’s the necessary strategic direction in with the district must go. So, a revised timeline has been approved that will have the schools up for consolidation chosen by August and a final vote in October.
The first consolidations will begin in 2020. The ultimate goal is to bridge the growing budget gap, set to hit $60-million next year.
