State House passes School Finance reform bill

Texas Capital Grounds

The Texas House Passed its version of a school finance bill sending waves of celebration through lawmakers and educators alike. Previously, Austin area State Representative Gina Hinojosa said the State has stepped out on the tax payers leaving them to deal with the growing school finance burden. But after the all but unanimous vote passing HB3 last night, she’s singing a different tune, and is more hopeful.

She explained if the bill became law, it would increase per student spending in Austin by $1,759.00  adding this would also mean a bit of tax relief, with a few cents lopped off the property tax rate.
Hinojosa believes there is a feeling of desperation when it comes to school funding in Austin and around Texas. While HB3 isn’t perfect she sees its passage through the State House as a big win.
