APD ASST CHIEF ELI REYES

The Austin Police Department has sent out more than 2,500 backlogged sex assault kits for testing and the results are starting to come back.

APD Assistant Chief Eli Reyes said a t a press conference Thursday afternoon,  thus far 35{a77561a3d577901ee15dca150fea59fe3467aeb2007c1dd097ee2f4c696e6096} of those have come back with positive results.

“Sex crimes reviews the DNA cases to determine if that DNA is going to provide additional leads for that investigation.” Reyes continued, some of those backlogged kits date back to the 80s.”We Do notify the victims on a case by case basis, when we get these kits back, if their cases are being reopened.”

APD no longer has any backlogged kits, Reyes explained, that means they don’t have any  30+ day old sex assault kit that have not been sent to the labs.
