Voters may get their say on a Major League Soccer stadium planned for North Austin

This push kicked off last year when the group ‘Friends of McKalla Place’ began collecting signatures against the use of the 24-acre plot of land near the Domain on which the city and Precourt Sports Venture plan to build a 20-thousand seat stadium.

After submitting that petition, the city says it has verified some 29-thousand signatures, paving the way for it to be placed on the May 4 ballot for a public vote.  Friends of McKalla Place and other groups argue that the deal will burden taxpayers since it involves millions of dollars in tax breaks for Precourt.

However, Precourt says this petition means very little since the ink is already dry on the lease agreement.  The team is set to begin in 2021.
