A report this week proposed reinvesting money across the district currently being spent on AISD’s three magnet programs at Fulmore and Kealing Middle Schools, and the Liberal Arts and Science Academy. Trustee Cindy Anderson called this an aggressive attack on low-income minority students who traditionally attend these programs. She said the report basically names two schools for closure, “Because at Kealing for example the magnate population is 2/3rds, if we were to respond positively Kealing would be up for closure as well as LASA.”
But the task force explained only 3000 of the 80,000+ students in AISD are in these programs so the money is not being well spent, adding that magnets only add to segregation because they don’t integrate into the schools where they’re hosted.
