City council approves a massive new headquarters for Austin Energy

This 275-square-foot headquarters will cost the city $150-million.  Located in the Mueller Development, the council has purchased land for the headquarters instead of opting for the usual decision to lease — something council member Alison Alter said will save Austin $30-million over 30 years.

However, the council will need to finance the entire $150-million and thus rates for most Austin Energy customers will rise as a result.

Ground will be broken sometime next year.
