A November ballot item could give voters final say on changes to land codes

The Austin City Council has a plan to revive Code Next after the election, which would overhaul the entire land development code.  On the November ballot is ‘Proposition J,’ which attorney Fred Lewis says would let voters to have the final word on any code changes for the first time ever.

The council did not want voters to have a say about the original Code Next. Lewis says a code rewrite could impact everything from single-family home density to removing the right of businesses and homeowners to appeal decisions made by the council.
